FIOTÚN—VIIIFitun, Fitton, Fetton; probably 'son of Fitun' or 'Phitun' (a Norman personal name). The surname came into Ireland about the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion. 'Hereuic Fitun' occurs in the Dublin Roll of Names, A.D. 1216. Sir Edward Fyton of Gawsworth in Cheshire was President of Connacht in the time of Elizabeth, and Sir Alexander Fytton was Lord Chancellor of Ireland in the time of James II. There are a few families of the name still in Co. Limerick.
