de BEARNABHÁL—XIde Bernevale, Barnewall, Barnavill, Barnwell; i.e., 'of Bernevale,' probably in Normandy. This family came into Ireland about the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion and settled in Dublin and Meath. They were long one of the most influential families of the Pale, and played an important part in the history of the country.
