Biadhtach

Rev Patrick Woulfe
1923

BIADHTACH—XII—Betagh, Beatagh, Beatty, etc.; Irish 'Biadhtach,' i.e., the hospitaller, public victualler. This family is said to be of Danish descent, but in the early Anglo-Irish records the Christian names are Norman. They were seated in Moynalty, in Co. Meath, from an early period, and possessed considerable property down to Cromwellian times when, by fraud and perjury, Francis Betagh was stripped of his estates. Branches of the family appear to have settled in Mayo, Galway and Clare.
