ÁIRSEABÓID—VIIIArchebaud, Archibaud, Archabold, Archibold, Archbold, etc.; 'son of Arcenbald' or 'Eorconbeald' (a Teutonic personal name). This family settled in Ireland at an early period and obtained extensive possessions in Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare. Even as early as 1315, they were in alliance with the O'Byrnes and O'Tooles. They were prominent in the wars of the 17th century, and in 1641 and 1691, several of the name in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow were indicted of treason and attainted. The name was early corrupted to Ashpole, Ashpool, etc.
