CORK, a maritime county in Munster province; the largest of Ireland, both in extent of surface and of arable land. Boundaries N., Limerick; E., Tipperary and Waterford; S., the Atlantic Ocean; W., Kerry; Greatest length, E and W, 110 miles, greatest breadth, N. and S., 70 miles; comprising an area of 2,885 square miles, or 1,846,333 acres; of which, 1,308,882 are arable, 465,889 uncultivated, 52,180 in plantations, 6,515 in towns, and 12,867 under water. The coast is indented with numerous bays, the principal of which are, Bantry, Dunmanus, Clonakilty, Kinsale, Cork Harbour, and Youghal. Off the coast are the islands of Cape Clear (population, 1,052), Whiddy, and several smaller. The W. part of the county is mountainous; the N. and E. extremely fertile. The mineral productions are chiefly iron, which was raised in quantities until the timber for smelting was exhausted; copper, the mines of which at Allahies employ from 1,500 to 2,000 hands; coal, limestone, fullers' earth, and brick clay. Throughout the whole county there is a great diversity of soil, climate, and scenery. The population in 1861 amounted to 537,496, inhabiting 76,337 houses.

The county is divided into E. and W. Ridings for the purpose of holding general sessions of the peace; the East Riding has been sub-divided into 3 districts for Quarter Sessions purposes, and the West Riding into 2 divisions. There are in the county 23 baronies - E. Riding: Barretts, Barrymore, Condons and Clongibbons, Cork, Duhallow, Fermoy, Imokilly, Kerrycurrihy, Kinalea, Kinnatalloon, part of Muskerry E., Orrery and Kilmore, Kinsale, and Youghal Liberties. - W. Riding: Bantry, Bear, Carbery E. and W., consisting of the E. and W. divisions of each of these baronies, Courceys, Ibane and Barryroe, Kinalmeaky, Muskerry W. and part of Muskerry E., and 251 parishes. It comprises the dioceses of Cork, Cloyne, Ross, and a small part of Ardfert. The principal towns are, Cork city, population in 1841, 80,720; in 1861, 78,892; Youghal, 6,328; Bandon, 6,218; Kinsale, 4,000; Mallow, 3,612; Fermoy, 6,202; Queenstown, 8,653; Macroom, 3,283; Skibbereen, 3,694; Kanturk, 2,226; Midleton 3,378; Charleville, 2,458; Mitchelstown, 2,920; Bantry, 2,444; Clonakilty, 3,074; Dunmanway, 2,071; and Passage West, 2,287; The county returns 8 members to Parliament; 2 for the county at large, constituency, in 1859, 15,716; 2 for Cork city, constituency, 3,173; and 1 for each of the boroughs of Youghal, Bandon Mallow, and Kinsale; constituencies, 234, 229, 151, and 144. The Assizes are held in Cork city. Cork is the head quarters of the military district of that name; and there are barrack stations at Kinsale, Charlesfort, Camdenfort, Fermoy, Ballincollig, Carlisle fort, Spike-island, Youghal, Hawlbowline, Rockey island, Mitchelstown, Buttevant, Mallow, Bandon, Dunmanway, Millstreet, and Cloghnakilty. A depot for convicts has been established at Spike island, where persons sentenced to transportation are to remain, instead of being sent to New South Wales.

The net annual value of property in the county, under the Tenement Valuation Act, is £1,023,587.
