Ord family genealogy

Arms: For the Armorial Bearings of this family, see Burke's "General Armory."

THIS sirname, it may be said, is of English origin, and should not therefore be inserted among Irish genealogies. But, according to some, it is derived from the Irish oradh, "excellency;" and to others from ord, "order." At present, however, we can only trace the lineage of the following branch of this ancient family. Edward the First, King of England, who (see p. 38) is No. 115 on the "The Lineal Descent of the Royal Family," was twice married, first to Eleanor, sister of Alphonso XI., King of Castile, in Spain; and, second, to Margaret, daughter of Philip III., King of France. Of this second marriage was born Thomas Plantagenet, from whom this family is descended.
